Engaging San Diego’s Communities for Voter Turnout (2024)
The United Taxi Workers of San Diego has been actively working to engage African and Black Caribbean-born households in our community. Our focus includes any household with a member born in Africa or a Caribbean nation, as well as all Black/African Americans residing in San Diego County.
Our Target Population
In our outreach efforts, we identified a population of nearly 50,000 registered voters within this demographic who had registered phone numbers. This group is familiar to us, as we have previously engaged many of these individuals in past campaigns. However, this time, we expanded our efforts to encompass a broader spectrum of Black voters throughout San Diego County.
Voter Engagement Results
According to PDI (Political Data Inc.), we reached out to 1,545 voters during this campaign, and an impressive 1,056 of those individuals followed through and voted. This represents a turnout rate of 68.4%, showcasing the effectiveness of our outreach efforts.
Observations on Voter Numbers
Interestingly, since the inception of this campaign, the total number of eligible voters in our universe has decreased from 49,300 to 40,500. This decline raises questions about the changing dynamics in voter registration and engagement within this community. Notably, the overall turnout among this reduced population stood at 59.35%.
Impact of Our Outreach
When we analyze the average voter turnout and apply it to the population we contacted and confirmed, it becomes evident that there is a notable difference of 139 voters. These individuals likely would not have cast their votes if it were not for our proactive phone outreach.
Conclusion
The efforts of the United Taxi Workers of San Diego in mobilizing and engaging voters from African and Black Caribbean backgrounds have proven impactful. We are committed to continuing our work in ensuring that every voice is heard during elections, and we look forward to further enhancing voter participation in our community.
